The third generation Supra, introduced mid 1986, took on a completely different look. Now completely separated from the Celica, it was the showcase of top-notch Toyota technology. A new racing-type double wishbone 4 wheel independent suspension was used along with an optional electronic strut damping system, TEMS (Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension). Also new was a 3.0 liter, twin cam, 24 valve inline 6 cylinder rated at 200 horsepower. In 1987, the Supra Turbo was introduced. This new engine helped the Supra compete with the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and Ford Mustang. Also for 1987, cloth seats became standard and ABS brakes were offered as an option. In 1989, the Supra underwent minor cosmetic surgery inside and out. New features included a new front bumper, new body side moldings, new instrument cluster gauges, new turn signal/windshield washer stalk, new climate control head unit, new tail lights, sleek new spoiler for the turbo models and various other interior enhancements. In 1990, the Supra's steering wheel was redesigned and came standard with a driver's side airbag. An optional new body colored, outer sliding factory power sunroof was now offered as an alternative to the hardtop or sport roof models. Power progressive steering was also an option on non-turbo Supras, but was standard on the turbo models. For 1991, the new "tri-oval" Toyota logo was applied to the front nose and the wheels were updated to a 5 spoke design. Here are pictures of some local MK3's... click for larger picture
